The Review:

When has playing by those stupid rules ever got a girl to the alter. In fact is not following the rules just another version of game playing? But if you think about it, women have played by someone's rules all along to score their Mr. Right. In this spring’s romantic comedy, The Sweetest Thing, starring Cameron Diaz (Vanilla Sky) as Christina Walters, master game player, she attempts to teach the real rules or at least her version of the rules. Her partner in screwing with the opposite sex’s heads is Christina Applegate as attorney at law Courtney Rockcliffe. If you were charmed by There’s Something About Mary, this comedy is not as charming. In fact the sweet Cameron is a bit pathetic. No, not dressed down, or sans makeup, but in her attitude about love and life.

The movie begins with interviews of former boyfriends of Walters. They go into detail of her giving them the wrong number, the brush off without cause or warning and just toying with their minds. Diaz and Applegate walk in on their friend Jane Burns (Selma Blair of Legally Blonde) crying over a container of ice cream and her dog-eared book of "The Rules." Her boyfriend just dumped her explaining he has been tying to do this for months now. Off to the clubs for drinking and dancing they haul Jane. The ultimate party girls hit the dance floor and send the men crying. In Diaz’s effort to hook up her friend Jane, she grabs the ass of a passing male, Peter Donahue (Thomas Jane of Original Sin). He turns to blast her for her frankness and she tosses him on Jane. He politely excuses himself and as he walks away Diaz calls him a dick.  He turns around to confront this tart and they have it out. Jane spots a hottie and sneaks off to play tonsil hockey. After a heated argument Peter leaves to meet his party. Diaz grabs Applegate for a women's session in the bathroom. This darling little scene allows the audience to see all the women in the bathroom grope Applegate’s breasts to feel how real they are. Diaz is dishing over Peter and on her way out of the lounge spills Peter's drink, and then offers to replace it. Cut to the invite to a party up in the bachelor suite (his brother is getting married). The obnoxious Roger (Jason Bateman) is chasing anything in a thong. Well back to her game playing where she lets him think she will show up, but goes home to fantasize about the guy instead. Always leave them wanting more, but without a possibility of getting it. It is obvious that Diaz has the hots for Peter, so she chases after him to find out he is not the guy she thought he was and she is not the girl she has been pretending to be.

The Sweetest Thing, directed by Roger Kumble, has great sex spoof scenes, a movie montage and potty humor for girls. This is not the typical cuties role for Diaz and she does come across as shallow and desperate.  Also appearing in this movie are Parker Posey (Josie and the Pussycats), Jennifer Gimenez (Corky Romano), Johnathon Schaech (The Forsaken) and Nancy Pimental who coincidently takes credit for the writing. If you are looking for laughs, a little punani humor and to see what Diaz’s breasts looked like at 20 and 28 then this is the film for you. Now if predictability doesn't deter your movie choices, even better. Because you know they will eventually end up together because it is a romantic comedy, but no Mr. Right is going to fall for an ass grabbing, vulgar, name calling bitch in a bar even if she is pretty. With that said, even with no actual nudity I give The Sweetest Thing an eight on the About-Movies.com scale.

Bu bye
