A
bunch of dogs cracking jokes. Sounds amusing right? Well I think it would be
funny too, but Disney’s Snow Dogs is not that funny, nor do the dogs do much
talking (one whole scene). From the advertising for the film you get the
impression that its all about the dogs, and of course these dogs can talk.
Wrong! This film is a father-son reunion crapfest with the emphasis on crap. Snow
Dogs stars the occasionally funny Cuba Gooding Jr. (Rat
Race) as Ted Brooks, a Miami dentist. Shortly into the film the adult Ted
learns from his mom (Nichelle Nichols) that he is adopted from some woman in
Alaska. He also learns that his biological mother died recently and he has to go
to Alaska for the reading of the will. And that’s about enough of that. Ted
goes, learns some things about his parents and then about himself. The mean
Thunder Jack (James Coburn from Monsters,
Inc.) is his father Luke! They each save the other’s life. Ted meets a hot
woman (Joana Bacalso from Bedazzled)
and then moves to Alaska. Ugh. A better recent film set in Alaska is Out Cold, which I gave four whole couches. That shows how highly I regard this Brian Levant directed film. Despite this being a stupid and fairly unfunny story, Jim Kouf wrote the screenplay based loosely on parts of a book by Gary Paulsen. Others in the cast are Sisqo, Frank C. Turner, M. Emmet Walsh, Graham Greene (Nothern Exposure and The Green Mile), and Brian Doyle-Murray. Most of the jokes just weren’t funny to me, though I’m not part of Disney’s target audience for this film. However, I didn’t hear that many laughs from the target audience of kids at the theater either. Bottom line, stupid movie that gets just one couch out of ten. Aloha.
