The Review:

I was thinking what is the worst that could happen? Well, I could get stuck seeing a movie starring Danny De Vito and Martin Lawrence, is what was I thinking. Well surprise surprise surprise. This movie was not all that bad. I even laughed at some of the gags.   De Vito (The Rainmaker) plays a very rich man, Max Fairbanks but his money was not his own, he married into it. De Vito’s wife, was Nora Dunn as Lutetia Fairbanks. The deal breaker to the marriage was disease or scandal. Pretty much the deal breaker for me would be De Vito, come on look at him and he always plays these slime balls. Let me tell you this, De Vito is still Louie De Palma from Taxi but now he has money, lots and lots of money. Then there is Lawrence, he plays Kevin Caffrey, a thief. Lawrence falls in love with Gloria (Glenne Headly) and this is where the story really begins.

Lawrence (Bad Boys) is attending an auction of paintings and the gallery owner approaches him because she thinks he doesn’t know art and can’t afford it. Well he tells her a piece is a forgery and why he thinks so. She scoffs at his accusations but then goes to tell her she thinks she is wearing five hundred dollar eyeglasses but she is really wearing knockoffs. Like those would fool anyone. Lawrence is just there to scope out what he is going to steal, and Gloria is at the auction too. She is crying because she was forced to sell a painting her father gave her to cover her hotel bill (dot com job done gone). Later he shows up at her door with the painting in hand and after his reward, she rewards him again with a ring her father gave her (his lucky ring). Now cut to De Vito and his attorney Walter Greenbaum (Richard Schiff, Dr. Dolittle) discussing his strategy on filing bankruptcy for one of his companies. Included in this would be one of his homes (playboy mansion for playmates and wanna be anchors). While De Vito is getting it on with playmate of the month, Lawrence and his partner Berger (John Leguizamo, Moulin Rouge!) break into the home and do what they do best. Well Lawrence is caught in the act but Leguizamo takes off. While the police are hauling off Lawrence, De Vito claims that ring is his and steals from the thief. The remainder of the plot is Lawrence trying to steal back his ring. De Vito loses millions just to hold on to the ring. What he thinks is his lucky ring. Now Dunn finds out about the playmate and his other insidious activities and threatens to leave, disease or scandal the deal breaker.  This is when the antics become funny.

Since I was pleasantly surprised that this movie did not suck I won’t be harsh. I did not get to see any booty, it would have been nice to have seen Leguizamo’s ass, but I guess I should be thankful this was not the worst movie I had to sit through. Sam Weisman directed, What’s the Worst That Could Happen? and Donald Westlake wrote the novel and Matthew Chapman wrote the screenplay. I give this film seven on the About-Movies.com rating.

Outie.
