Did you see the teen flick Disturbing Behavior by chance? If you did, then you know that the movie didn't have anything disturbing in it. Well Training Day does have some things that are very disturbing and even real to life. The story goes a little something like this. Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke from Great Expectations) just transferred to an elite narcotics unit of the LAPD. He transferred so that he can move up in the force and become a detective, and then eventually move on up to be a captain or higher. Alanzo Harris (Denzel Washington of The Hurricane & The Bone Collector) is in charge of this small unit, and knows exactly why Hoyt wants into his unit. The first day, which is the only say we see, boils down to being an audition for Hoyt. It is also the same day that Alanzo needs to come up with a lot of cash to pay off the Russian Mafia for him killing one of their men in Vegas over the weekend. Hoyt doesn’t know this at first (neither do we), nor does he know that Alanzo is corrupt. However he slowly catches on to things, but is it too late for the choirboy? How far will Hoyt go for a promotion and to save his own ass? Other people in this Antoine Fuqua (The Replacement Killers)directed film are Macy Gray, Snoop Dogg, Tom Berenger, Scott Glenn (Vertical Limit), Cliff Curtis (Blow), Dr. Dre, and a whole lot more. The screenplay for Training Day was written by David Ayer. There is a lot of suspense in the film, some well placed laughs, and Denzel is one badass mofo. Ethan Hawke even puts in a good performance as the good cop. Unfortunately, Training Day exposes a side of the police that is way too often accurate. I’m not saying all cops are corrupt, but as they say one bad apple ruins the whole bunch. Now off my soapbox, and back to the film, which earns eight couches out of a possible ten. For About-Movies.com, I’m signing off.
