Martial arts. Inter-universe travel. Explosions. Jet Li versus Jet Li. But no freakin’ nudity! Anyway, The One has a lot of things in it, including some 100 plus universes, but not a great story. The film begins with a character named Lawless being killed by some guy named Yulaw (both are Jet Li from Kiss of The Dragon). We are then introduced to Roedecker and Evan, two specials cops sent to catch Yulaw. We then learn that Roedecker (Delroy Lindo from Gone in Sixty Seconds and Heist) used to be Yulaw’s partner before Yulaw became an outlaw. Evan (Jason Statham, Ghosts of Mars) had just recently been assigned to Roedecker to help catch Yulaw, who is now wanted for killing in 123 different universes. You see according to the movie there are all these parallel universes out there, and a different version of you exists in each one, and some of the universes have developed a way to travel between various universes. Yulaw is illegally traveling between all the universes, killing all the other versions of himself, which all the remaining version of him absorb the dead version’s energy making them stronger, faster, and smarter. Well after knocking off Lawless, there is only one version left, Gabe who lives in our universe. So both versions are quite powerful compared to normal humans, but one is evil and the other is good. Roedecker and Evan must stop Yulaw since some think that if he succeeds, the universes might collapse, or that Yulaw might become a god. Other actors in this James Wong (also directed Final Destination) film are Carla Gugino (Spy Kids), Dylan Bruno (Carrie 2), Steve Rankin, Dean Norris, Darin Morgan, James Morrison, Richard Steinmetz, Harriet Sansom Harris (Nurse Betty), and a bunch of other people you probably haven’t heard of. Wong and Glen Morgan get the credit for the writing. If you are looking for a purely sci-fi action film then The One will be just fine for you. But if you would actually like a decent story, then too bad, cause you’re not going to find one here. So the only saving graces of the film are the good action scenes and the special effects, but that only earns it four couches from me. For About-Movies.com, bye bye.
