"Can you dig it?" I sure can, that is Shaft directed by John Singleton. This remake of Shaft starring Samuel L. Jackson as John Shaft, the nephew of the original 1971 Shaft. The suave private dick who coincidentally has reprised his role is Richard Roundtree. Shaft will never let you down and neither does Jackson (Rules of Engagement) with his incredible performance as a police detective that breaks all the rules to get the bad guy. This movie contains a great deal of violence, and I can dig that. Following Hollywood past for Jackson, he still doesn't get a leading love interest, even though he is the ladies sex machine. Well maybe next time Jackson will score in the romance area. A breakthrough performance can be found in Jeffrey Wright (Hamlet) as Peoples Hernandez, a Dominican barrio drug lord. Look for Wright at the Oscars for a supporting nomination. This film starts out with a racially motivated senseless murder, and the rich white boy walks. With daddy's money he keeps going all the way to Switzerland. Just as I said though, Shaft never lets you down, he gets his man, one way or another. To bring down the rich kid, Shaft needs to find the only witness, Diane a waitress played by Toni Collette (The Sixth Sense). She has been running and hiding for two years. Now the attorneys are looking, Shaft is looking, so is the hired hit man and the crooked cops. This is a must see movie for those that love action with style. I give Shaft nine couches out of 10. Now if I got to see a little booty from my man Jackson, this might have been a perfect 10. I can dig it. "Still the man, any questions" Last updated: Thursday, March 20, 2008 02:49:16 AM |
