The Review:

The War Zone is set in modern Britain and deals basically with incest. This seems odd since when I think of incest I think of Arkansas. As to the movie, it focuses on Tom (Freddie Cunliffe) who is a young man of fifteen who just had to move with his family from London to the countryside. Needless to say he is not too happy about this, nor is his sister Lucy (Kate Ashfield) particularly happy about the move either, but then again she has more pressing issues. The film begins with the family of four rushing off to the hospital so mom can deliver the fifth member of the family, but they crash on the way. Everyone is OK and they even deliver the baby right there. This is where the film starts to get weird. Suddenly we have breasts and penises all over the place (and these actors and actresses are not too attractive). Then we find out about the incest between dad (Ray Winstone) and daughter Lucy. Lucy also wants to sleep with Nick (Colin Farrell), while Tom is interested sexually in Jessie (Lara Belmont) the nanny. Well the movie gets pretty graphic after this. Unlike in The Cider House Rules, the director of The War Zone (Tim Roth, first time directing but known for his acting in movies like Pulp Fiction and Rob Roy) decided to actually show the incest and not just imply that it had happened. Frankly this really put me off. The film is based on a novel by Alexander Stuart, which is one novel that I will not be reading. This movie gets just plain bizarre at some points, and was not anything like what I expected the film to be (I thought maybe something about a war with tanks and guns). Well as you may have already guessed, I did not care for this film. I will however give this: the film was beautifully set on the English coast and had good acting. But in the end the story was not one that I wanted to see. I give The War Zone three whole couches on the scale of ten. Goodbye for now.
